If you have received a statement from us, this page explains why a balance can remain after your insurance has paid — and what, if anything, you need to do.
Still unsure after reading this? Email accounts@savmed.ky and our team will go through it with you.
Sometimes insurance doesn't cover as much as expected. Remember, the status of your insurance plan is constantly in flux — benefits typically shift by the time a claim reaches pre-approval, or when a payment is made after a service. This means the procedure may not be fully covered, benefits have been exhausted, or benefit caps have been reached. There could also be exclusions in the plan, the plan was terminated, or deductibles have not been met. All the above means patients are responsible for the balance owing.
So you can feel confident: Savannah Medical Clinic submits all claims to insurance companies well within the six months statutory filing period, then settles any remaining balances with patients. This process often takes up to several weeks, depending on the insurer. Our pre-certification team can help you understand your benefits in detail at any time and help prepare you for any out-of-pocket charges in advance.
Many times, it takes an insurer weeks to months to evaluate a claim. If you have a complex claim, it could take even longer to evaluate. No matter what, Savannah Medical Clinic is working on your behalf to settle utilising your benefits.
We want to be as transparent as possible, so you understand that we are doing our best to have your insurance company settle any balances. No action is required on your part — we just want you to know that we are investigating on your behalf.
Balance billing happens after you've paid your deductible, co-insurance, or co-payment, and your insurance company has also paid everything it's obligated to pay toward your medical bill. If there is still a balance owing on that bill, it means you are responsible for the balance owing.
It's possible that your medical service was simply one that is not covered under your health insurance policy, or that you have maximised all available benefits under your plan. There are always exceptions, so speak to an SMC representative to understand why your care was not covered. Your SMC team is doing everything they can to obtain coverage or work with you on an acceptable payment plan.
